What is AFRICAN NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL (ANYC)?

Africa National Youth Council (ANYC)is a UK-African development and communication strategy and platform designed to work in partnership with young people to improve opportunities for their expression, exchange and meaningful participation in advocacy, decision-making and development using multi-media tools and channels (i.e. online, TV, Radio and Print) as well as visual and performing arts and culture.

While a Secretariat for Africa National Youth Council (ANYC) is currently hosted by Bradford, the governance structure for ANYC provides for leadership of partnerships and activities in various UK Cities and African countries by partner agencies (RCOs, CBOs, Charities, NGOs working on/with children and youth, associations, youth clubs etc).

Main Areas of Focus and Objectives of ANYC

Exchange and Networking :To facilitate sharing of experiences, ideas and building consensus on key issues amongst young people through face-to-face and virtual dialogue, as well as support for children and youth networks.

Media and Advocacy Training and Mentorship :To build the capacities of young people in utilising the media effectively in their advocacy and other communication initiatives.

ANYC Product Development and Dissemination: To increase visibility of young people and their impact on public opinion by broadening spaces on mainstream media and other channels for media products made by or about children and youth.

Advocacy and Exchange with Decision Makers, Policy Makers and Political Leaders: To facilitate inter-generational exchange and understanding and expand the influence of young people in holding leaders accountable for their promises and contributing to decision making at all levels including high level regional, national, continental and international fora.

Knowledge Management :To provide a platform for sharing of information, documentation, research, good practices and lessons learned related to the children and youth agenda in UK and Africa, for easy access and use by young people and those working to support them.

Partnerships and Resource Mobilization
To strengthen partnerships, resource sharing and resource mobilization amongst children and youth organizations and organizations working in their interest, in order to expand opportunities for meaningful youth engagement and development.

ANYC Work in Progress:
•    Development of a resource pack that will bring together in one place relevant documents related to the children and youth agenda in UK and Africa.
•    Development of an advocacy and media training strategy and pack that will guide and focus future training programmes.

My Hero Behind Bars

By Mary F.

Today I go to school with a big smile like every day. I sit in the classroom and everybody is laughing around me and I ask myself, what if everybody had the same problem as me, would they keep laughing?
I do not think so because you don't feel like laughing when your father is in jail and today is the day when he's set to be sentenced.

Magic at My Fingertips

By Rose A.

When I was 9 and still living in Uganda, I wondered why my two teenage cousins liked to paint their nails. It seemed like a waste of time. I was curious to know what was fun about it, so one day I snuck into their room and put on their black nail polish while they were out at work. The nails looked terrible. I painted too thick in some spots and painted onto my fingers in others. But I had fun doing it. It looked like magic to me. Looking at other girls, I realized that in order to get better-looking painted nails, I needed to grow my nails long. The only problem was that long nails weren’t allowed in my school, and I eventually got in trouble for my new hobby.
